Chapter Sixteen

When I came to, I tried to sit up, but the pain in my head made me think better of it. I felt the back of my skull and gingerly scoped out the knot that had sprung up there in response to my latest bashing. Once I had determined that my head didn't have any new holes in it, I took a deep breath and forced myself into an upright position. I was so damn dizzy that I had to grab the edge of the cot I was sitting on in order to avoid pitching onto the floor.

Once the waves of nausea and the double vision passed, I stood up and paced back and forth in my narrow cell. I knew that Dan and Ahmed were here in the same building with me, but it didn't look like I was going to be of much use to them in my current state. The single, small window in the room wasn't big enough to stick my head through, let alone the rest of my body. The door was steel and solid as a rock. I sank down on the end of the cot and rested my head in my hands.

I sat up abruptly when I heard a key turn in the lock. The door swung inward and a blond giant materialized. He wore nothing but a pair of tight shorts that showed more than they hid from view. When he stepped into the light that spilled through the small window in the corner, his shoulder-length blond hair flashed with silvery highlights. He had a prominent jaw and a high forehead, but his heavily taped nose and two swollen black eyes somewhat marred his overall appearance. My mind flashed back to the scene of Ahmed's kidnapping…the blood around the scene and Juan's description of Ahmed's fighting abilities. If this was his victim, I had to admit that I was impressed by Ahmed's prowess.

"So you're the asshole who's been giving everybody so much trouble." He set the tray he carried on a shelf by the door and folded his arms across his impressive chest.

"Thanks for the compliment," I replied coolly. "What happened to your face? Run into a door?"

"Fucking little Arab bastard caught me off guard." His face flushed scarlet as he recalled the incident. "I've been promised a crack at him before he's disposed of though. He'll be sorry he fucked with Mick Crandall. I can't even do my frigging job."

"And what might that be?" I was fascinated. Why would a broken nose keep a muscle-bound goon from being a muscle-bound goon?

"I'm the star act in this dump. They ain't letting me out on the stage until my face heals up. You know how much I'm losing a night in tips?"

"What kind of show is it?" I had to admit I was curious. I couldn't see him playing Shakespeare, or even light comedy for that matter.

"Whaddya mean?"

"Well, I mean what do you do on the stage?" I spoke a little more slowly to give him a chance to catch up.
